was born in October 1874 in Kalamazoo, Michigan to Herman T. and Sarah Woods Volk. The birth record says the 11th or it is a ‘ditto’ mark indicating the 8th like the entry above it. In comparing other entries on the birth record sheet, I am inclined to believe it is a ditto mark, as another entry is a clearly written 11 (eleven) with the same ditto mark afterwards. The death certificate says her date of birth was the 14th, but that is from a secondary informant. It is interesting to note that her birth certificate states her legal name as ‘Elizabeth’, but her name changed throughout the years between ‘Sarah’ and ‘Elizabeth’ or as Leonard called her, ‘Lizzie’.
‘Lizzie’ married Leonard Roetman April 8, 1891 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Sarah Elizabeth Roetman died of a Stroke on March 15, 1941 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She is buried in Fairplains Cemetery
